The Trump Administration to Provide Half Food Stamp Funds in November

The national government revealed it would grant partial relief to millions of SNAP beneficiaries as the ongoing federal closure approached a historic length.

Benefit Cut Information

Amid increasing anxiety for the around 42 million individuals enrolled in the SNAP, the USDA confirmed it would use reserve funds to continue assistance, although at just 50% of the regular allotment recipients usually obtain.

Resources for the program legally expired on Saturday due to the budget standoff, now in its 34th consecutive day with no sign of completion.

Judicial Actions

The decision came in a court filing after earlier rejections to release emergency funding on alleged legal grounds. A court had decided the administration could not deny program funds as a result of the shutdown.

After the judicial ruling, the president stated it would be "pleased" to provide emergency funding for the program.

Execution Hurdles

Authorities noted that funds could commence by midweek, but emphasized the need for more guidance from the courts on how to properly transfer resources for SNAP benefits.

  • Various states have stated it will take days or even longer periods to distribute funds to low-income recipients.
  • Crowds have been reported at food banks across the country.
  • In multiple locations, stadium parking lots were converted into assistance centers.

State Emergency Responses

Several states, including New York, Oregon, and Virginia, declared states of emergency to provide temporary resources for benefits. However, these allocations were expected to be a fraction of the normal federal funding.

The federal costs for SNAP amount to approximately $8 billion each month in the United States.
